This is a man. Unfortunately, he was born with the signs of lycanthropy... note the "extra" body hair and equal length index and middle fingers. In his hometown, it wasn't a problem, because the townspeople knew he was born of two well-respected human parents. But when he ventured into the world and his "secret" was discovered, he was chained in the dungeon. He is awaiting death because people judged his mind based on his body characteristics, which he cannot control and did not choose.
This is symbolic. Everyone is encouraged to analyze it; Freudians might even be right for once.
