the only choice between life and death
that i needed to think about
was one where a knife rested on my wrist
there have been several close calls--
at the wheel of 1800 pounds of steel
or across the lake from a forest fire
but with those, the choice was obvious
crank the wheel and nudge the gas
or do nothing but shout "FIRE!"
the only thing that came close was rape
where i wondered what she might have done
but i live so far away i could do nothing
will i someday be faced with a choice
that offers a brief moment to decide
and a lifetime to wonder what might have been
spare me, for i
can let the past go
but not the future
A word of warning: don't use the emergency brake in winter until you know how to recover from a skid, because that's usually what you'll get.
Another word of warning: don't build fires on windy days. (That wasn't me, it was my brother. I was too young (~9) to know how to build fires.)
