The Test - Poetry - Lakeside Park

The Test

There's blood on my hands
real and illusory
from smashing a skull in
from taking the bait out
red
wet
lines from the wire
and imagined spatterings

this should be a test--
who approaches with sadistic glee?
who shivers and tries to flee?
the lesson:

DEATH IS FOREVER
whether as a mercy killing
or murder in cold blood
or the mechanics of duty
or a simple accident
DEATH IS FOREVER

that's life
but we can't teach it--
we must protect the children.
it's best for them.

Does it strike anyone that video games themselves aren't the problem, it's growing up in a Safe World that strips awareness of pain and death from people? If all things are manufactured to be non-dangerous, nobody will know what danger is....
