I. PRELUDE
the compulsion steals away the mind:
taking it from the soft comforts
of sleep beneath the quilts on the matress
and carrying it gently to delirium
between wakefulness and dreams
before it lets the desire free
in gray light of false dawn drifting in
II. WITHIN
the compulsion steals away the mind:
no thought comes but to serve the desire,
no doubts, no worries of retribution,
no ethics to say otherwise, no joy
in that perfect slavery, only serving
that all-consuming hunger that aches in
every limb, seeking its own satisfaction
III. AFTERMATH
the compulsion steals away the mind:
many are blamed for its origins--
all gods or demons or spirits;
for who wants to admit the truth,
that it comes from within the mind,
when constructing the nonexistent
is such a convenient answer?
IV. MEMORY
the compulsion steals away the mind:
so sweet and wonderful and peaceful
as it guided action along secret paths
of dark and hidden desires so feared
in daylight's merciless gaze--
sweet and wonderful and peaceful
turned beautiful and terrifying
The graphic and poem share the same source of inspiration.
