the runners

I. II.
he ran and ran she ran and ran
away from the world away from the world
that loved to see his pain so indifferent to her pain
for ten years he ran she ran toward herself
first from them following her dreams in pencil
then from the demon he'd made wishing she could leave
when he realized the price the place where her body lies
paid for escape from them to run with unicorns
he ran from love she ran toward love
blind to it creeping into him but never expected it returned
for a brief moment he loved love for a moment she loved his love
until the war began then the war began
III.
time dragged on as they held each other's worlds together
sometimes her only grip on reality was his love
sometimes his last defense was her love for the demon
the world busied itself around them, indifferent to the war
as they met the curse of love, discovering the strength within
to shoulder enough of the pain to make it bearable again
running side by side through a wilderness of phantom shadows
This is kind of the same as 'Salvation'. But it's got some ideas from a prose description of us which got deleted. I can't remember everything about it, since I wasn't quite myself when writing it, so the whole thing is like a dream... so perfect when I had it, but now just broken scraps. The snapshot of being connected by copper and glass also came from that file.
The curse of love... there are times when you have to hold not only your own world, but theirs as well. And you have to deal with the anguish if you ever think that your love has brought them hell. {There were just enough details to make me think that I kept her from suicide only to be raped. When I read her mail telling it all (he apologized after being kneed in the groin, and then someone walked in), the absolute relief was unimaginable.}
Each time I write on it, I bring something slightly different to the paper. The wilderness of phantom shadows is an idea lifted out of "Double Agent" (in case you wondered, Rush isn't the only thing I listen to. It's just the only thing with words.)
