WW2 - Poetry - Lakeside Park

WW2

i raise my hand to my heart
to honor
the brave souls who fought
   by giving their lives
   by giving their future
   by giving their labor
in the name of freedom

i lower my eyes to earth
in sadness
for the souls betrayed
   by giving themselves
   on a normandy beach
   or a pacific isle
in the name of freedom

i stand listless and empty
in tribute
to souls who gave all
   that politics took
   and painted cruelly
   with dark corruption
in the name of freedom
